Bergamot is cold-pressed from the rind of the bergamot orange, a citrus fruit grown almost exclusively in the Calabria region of southern Italy. The oil has a complex, rounded citrus character with a distinct floral undertone, lighter and more sophisticated than lemon or sweet orange, which makes it one of the most versatile citrus oils in aromatherapy.
It is perhaps best known as the ingredient that gives Earl Grey tea its distinctive flavour and aroma. In aromatherapy, bergamot is believed to be uplifting and balancing: it is often described as an oil that can help lift low mood while remaining grounding rather than overstimulating. A 2011 study in Phytotherapy Research found that inhalation of bergamot oil was associated with reduced anxiety levels in a small cohort; the researchers noted this as a promising finding warranting further research.
Bergamot blends beautifully with other citrus oils, with florals such as lavender, jasmine and neroli, with resins such as frankincense, and with herbaceous oils such as rosemary and clary sage.
Photosensitivity: bergamot contains furanocoumarins, which make the skin more sensitive to UV light. Do not apply to skin that will be exposed to direct sunlight or a sunbed for at least 12 hours after application. Bergamot FCF (furocoumarin-free) is available as an alternative for daytime use.
